Artist | Based in Bali

Konstantin Grouss is an artist whose practice evolved from choreography into a material-based visual language.

Originally trained in contemporary dance, his work gradually shifted from performance and moving image toward image and material processes. Rather than representing movement, the current work translates choreographic principles such as balance, rhythm, suspension, and duration into still form.

Developed in Bali, his ongoing body of work, Extended Moment, investigates how temporary configurations may continue beyond their disappearance. Working with arrangements of flowers, leaves, stones, and crystals assembled briefly in time, he creates unique works realised across aluminium, wood, and silk.

These configurations are not preserved. Instead, they undergo successive translations through photography, digital intervention, and material processes. What existed briefly assumes another state.

This process forms part of Bali Ku, an ongoing artistic method developed in Bali. Through successive translations between living matter, image, and material surface, the work explores duration and the movement of images across different conditions and materials.

The current work grows from more than two decades of interdisciplinary artistic practice spanning choreography, performance, video, sculpture, and curatorial projects.

Based in Ubud, Bali, Indonesia, Grouss continues to develop Extended Moment and Bali Ku as interconnected fields of practice.
